Ñeembucú occupies the wedge of land where the Paraguay and Paraná rivers meet. It is Paraguay's smallest department by population and one of the wettest — vast esteros (marshes), sport fishing, low population density. Pilar, the capital, is a calm river port with a small textile mill and a 24-hour vehicle ferry to Argentina. Almost no foreigners live here, but the sport-fishing community attracts a steady seasonal crowd.

01 / overview

What Ñeembucú is

Pilar has 30,000 people, a colonial centre, one textile mill (Pilar Manufacturas) that employs much of the town, and a 24-hour ferry crossing to Argentina (Bermejo). Inland, the wetlands dominate — half the department is marsh in the wet season. Sport fishing for dorado + surubí is the main draw; several fishing lodges around Humaitá take guests.
